There are four factors that determine the quality of a pearl.

Shape: The more round the shape, the better the quality of pearl.

Shine: The pearl having more luster and shine is of the best quality.

Smoothness: The smoothness of the surface of the pearl indicates the higher quality of the pearl.

Size: Pearls are normally weighed in grams/carats. Pearls of good quality are available in all sizes. However, pearls of same size may differ in quality depending on shape, shine, and smoothness.

Protect your pearls:Wear them often, because the body's natural oils keep them lustrous. Pearls should be kept in a soft cotton cloth before and after use. Pearls should be kept in a cool and dry place. Avoid wrapping pearls in a colored paper or cloth, which have a tendency to fade. Do not use perfumes or hair sprays directly on the pearls.

Diamonds are measured in carats, or carat weight. One carat is equal to 0.2 of a gram. Sometimes weights are quoted in points, a point being 0.01 carat.

Diamond Care:

Clean with ultrasonic cleaner or with a solution of one part of ammonia in six parts of water. Daily wear and exposure to perspiration and chemicals such as hairspray can dull the diamonds and so periodic cleanings will keep them brilliant. Store the diamond jewelry individually in soft cloth pouches when not wearing.
